What is Model Approval in terms of legal metrology?

Model approval refers to the stamp acceptance given to a model so that can be used or sold in India. In terms of legal metrology, such consent is given for the sale and usage of weights and measuring products.

As per the legal metrology act, every manufacturer and importer of weights and measuring product must acquire the approval for such instrument on a mandatory basis. Governed as per the section 19 of  the legal metrology act, model approval can be issued in two ways.

  1. Through testing by the director general of legal metrology department.
  2. Without the need of testing by the director general of the legal metrology department.

What is the procedure to obtain model approval in India?

As per the legal metrology act, there are two ways an applicant can obtain approval certificate. They would differentiate based on the type of entity the applicant is:

  1. If the applicant is a manufacturer: If the applicant is a manufacturer of the weights and measuring product, then it would require the approval of director general of Legal Metrology Department to obtain the model approval.
  2. If the applicant is an importer: If the applicant is an importer of weights and measuring instrument, that would mean that the product has gone through approval process in its country of origin. The pre-approved factor removes the need to retest the product.

Steps of model approval for a manufacturer:

  1. Put together the required documents:
    1. Certificate of incorporation
    2. MOA and AOA
    3. Manufacturing License from the Municipal Corporation
    4. Diagram of the product
    5. Schematics of the product
    6. Duly-filled model approval application form
    7. Demand draft of the approval fees.
    8. Sample of the instrument (weights and measuring product)
  2. Submit the application to the legal metrology department
  3. The department will assess the application and the document
  4. If the application is correct and so are the documents, the instrument would be forward to Director General for testing
  5. If the product is manufacture as per the regulations set by the Legal Metrology Department, you’d get the Model approval certificate.

Steps of Model Approval for an importer

  1. Put together the required documents:
    1. Certificate of incorporation
    2. MOA and AOA
    3. Manufacturing License from the Municipal Corporation
    4. Schematics of the product
    5. Duly-filled model approval application form
    6. Demand draft of the approval fees.
  2. Submit the application to the legal metrology department
  3. The department will assess the application and the document
  4. If the departments finds that you’ve filled the application correctly and have provided the correct documents, it would issue you Model approval certificate.
